I have a pentax camera and supposedly XP doesn't need the
software installed as it already has the drivers. but
when i try to upload the images it locks up the camera and
computer and only uploads one or two images. i have
spoken to the pentax support and they said it is an issue
with the computer. i am at my wits end. does anyone have
any light to shed on this problem??? thanks

You are on XP and obviously your camera is recognized by XP. How much RAM
memory do you have on this computer? It should be something like 128, 256,
512 or 1024 MB. Obviously the more the better particularly if you have a
Pentad model creating large photo files. Tell us also your Pentad model.
This would help us trying to figure out your problem.

256 is fine this is not the problem.
This camera does not need a driver to work on XP.
All that is needed is to connect it and set it to PC mode and power the
camera.
If it starts to download and then stops, it is possible that some of the
photo files on the card are corrupted. This can happen when batteries are
too low. It may also stop transferring because the batteries are low.
Use new batteries and then try selecting only one or two photos and then
copy to your hard drive. See if this works. If it does, I suspect some
corrupted files on your card. You would then have to transfer files one or
two at a time and obviously at one point you will hit a corrupted file and
the transfer will stop. If so, note the file name and skip it and continue
to try getting the other files transferred. If this works, you should FORMAT
the card after you are done. To format the card you simply place the dial
node of your camera to Set up and then select format. This will erase all
the files on the card and will make it ready to take new pictures.
