Unable to updates via windowsupdate

Hi,

I have a severe problem, I can neither obtain automatic
updates although my system is set up correctly, or log
onto "windowsupdate.microsoft.com" site to obtain updates
manually. I am able to access other areas of the site
but not windowsupdate I continually encounter the
message " Cannot find server"

In fact any area on "microsoft.com" where I may obtain a
fix I am denied access.
I believe that something (virus, trojan etc) maybe
blocking the URL for these sites. I think it is also
blocking my antivirus software updates as I cannot log on
to www.Sophos.com.
How can I resolve this issue?

Do this little check for me, fire up Notepad, and browse to and open the
following file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\Hosts

Can you tell me what you have in there after the comments section.

presumeably this are IP addresses that corespond to the
URL. Tell me, what does this all mean?

Save the file and now try and access you anti-virus update's hopefully you
should be able to, I can't see an issue with windows update in there, but it
may fix that aswell. If not post back
