Unable to update

I am using WD ver. 1.1.10200 with eng ver 1.1.1186.0 and signature ver
1.0.0.0. No matter which way I try to update, i see no real update action,
but the tray icon first reports up to date signature and engine, but once the
pop up goes away, the yellow exclamation remains. What am I missing?

Go back to the Windows Defender home page and download the new version on top
of that old one, and then check for udates.
