When I attempt to run update from ths site
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/, all I get is the message:

Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or
later.

To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the Internet Explorer
Downloads website.

I have looked up the Knowledge Base, which covers the registration details
of Internet Explorer in the registry and in other files, and everywhere the
data looks correct.

This message has been coming up now for over a week, but strangely on
Wednesday I was able to access and run the update without problem, but acces
has been impossible since then.

Why does Microsoft site thing I am on the wrong version of Internet
Explorer, that is prior to version 5. As far as I recollect, my computer has
never had level 5 or below loaded!

All suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
See
817144- Thank You for Your Interest in Windows Update message when you
connect to the Windows Update Web Site
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=817144
Cause #3, your firewall is probably blocking user-agent information, is the
most likely cause. Check your firewall settings.

Hope this helps,

Thanks to Don.
Looks like it is the Firewall, but strangely its settings have not been
changed for many months, and update did work until a week ago!
However, briefly setting it to "accept all" has removed the problem.

<snipped>

When you installed your firewall you permitted access to the Windows Update
site using the then current settings/files. When the site was updated and
the settings/files changed you should have been given the option to either
accept or deny the change. If your firewall did not prompt you, then some
aspect of the firewall is not functioning as it should.

Instead of changing the firewall settings to "accept all" you should change
permissions in the firewall to accept/allow the new Windows Update site.
