"Thank You for Your Interest in Windows Update" Message When
You Connect to the Windows Update Web Site
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817144

Go to Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter.

If "Version 5.1 (Build 2600) is not shown, you are running a
beta version of XP for which there is no update support. If
that's the case, you need to reformat your drive and install
the released version of XP, after purchasing it.
