Unable to update files using Windows Briefcase

S

I recently purchased a new desktop. I transferred all my files from my
laptop to my desktop. I then wanted to use my briefcase to keep one of the
files that relates to my business updated. I transferred the one file from
my desktop to my briefcase, but when I modified the file and then tried to
update it tells me "that some of the files are read-only and will not be
updated". Consequently none of the files that I modified are being updated
on my desktop. I have done some research on Microsofts website and all the
fixes I see there either involve using the command prompt or changing the
registry. I defintely don't feel comfortable changing the registry and I
really don't want to mess with the command prompy either. Surely there is an
easier way! Help!

Hi sunkist,

Create a shortcut to your Briefcase folder on the Desktop. Right-click
Start and click Explore. Locate Folder Options under Tools and click View.
Scroll down until you see Show hidden files and folders and Dot it. Click
Apply then OK.

Locate SendTo under your User ID and click on it. Drag the Shortcut to
your Briefcase to the Right Window of Explore and Close Explore. Now right
click on the file that was updated and click Send To and click on Briefcase.
If the same file exists, it will ask if you want to replace the existing
file. Answer the question.

Now to change a Read-Only file to a file which you can make changes in,
right-click on the read-only file and click Properties. Uncheck Read-only
and click Apply then OK.

Hi creator,

I appreciate you responding, but I don't think I made myself clear in my
first post. I am trying to create a breifcase file on my laptop that I can
work on away from my PC and then hookup to my PC and update that original
folder. All of these files came from my laptop originally as it was all I
had for some time. I transfered the folder, subfolder and files from my PC
to the briefcase on my laptop, but when I modify the folder and then try to
update the original on my PC it tells me that some files are read-only and
can not be updated. Consequently the original folder on my PC doesn't get
updated. My briefcase recognizes that the folder on my PC needs to be
modified, but it won't do it because of the read-problem.

I can change the folder, subfolders and files to read only, but as soon as I
close that window, it changes right back to read-only.

I think the confusion was from me calling my PC a desktop (for desktop
computer). Sorry!

Creator,

I'm sorry again, noticed a typo on my last post. It should read, "I can
change my folder, subfolders and files from read-only, but as soon as I close
that window, it changes right back to read-only.

Hi sunkist,

So in other words, you need to allow users (meaning you) the right or be
given the right to change files and folders from another computer. Is this
what you are trying to do? Are you familiar with Network Magic?

http://www.networkmagic.com/product/basic-vs-premium.php

It helps you set up file sharing between computers.

In the meanwhile, create a new Briefcase Folder on the Desktop and open
up the new Briefcase before you start copying files into it. Now copy / move
that read-only file from the old Briefcase to the new Briefcase folder. Now
see if it can be changed from Read-only to a file that you can change.

Also make sure that both the Desktop and Laptop are apart of the Same
Workgroup Domain. If not part of the same Domain, may be your problem. Check
out the Domain / Workgroup. Are they the same or different? Click Start then
right-click My Computer and click Properties. Click on Computer Name to
check the Workgroup.
