I've been getting the following error messages when I am
trying to connect to the Internet, with Windows 98 Second
Edition. "Cannot completed installation due to proxy
settings configuration. If you know your proxy settings
click on advanced and assign port settings and server
name".(Settings are set to assign automatically)
Also when I launch my browser I get another message
saying "this program has performed an illegal operation
and will now shut down" When I click on details it shows
some registry key settings error message. One more thing,
the cipher encryption is at zero. This has happened
before, and the only way it was fixed, was to restore a
previous backup of the registry. And now even that
command is failing to restore when i
type "scanreg /restore". I get "restoration failed" and
can no longer connecto to the internet at all. Any
suggestions on how to resolve these issues, would greatly
appreciated. Thank you...

Check your system for "hijackware".

HijackThis (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip) is the
preferred tool to use these days. It will help to both identify and remove
any hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.
