Unable to turn off fax option

When telephone rings while computer is on, the computer automatically goes into a fax mode. Do not want to use fax option. How do I turn it off? The system is running Windows XP

Go to Fax console, click on the "Tools" tab then choose "Fax printer
configuration" [which is fax properties] in that window choose "Devices
tab".
Look near bottom of window for the "Properties" button, click on that.
In this next window choose, "Recieve" tab.
There you will see "Answer mode"
Choose "Manual"

Tried the Fax Console-Tools-Fax Printer Configuration route but cannot go past this point . Lower box shows that 'no fax printer is installed'

Thanks for your help. I was unable however to get past Fax Console-Tools-Fax printer configuration. A box at the bottom of the screen shows ' No fax printer installed'.
 
Is this Win XP fax program? Because when you go to Tools - Fax
Print.Config. the divice tab shows the modem the compuiter has in the lower
window [if this is the window we are talking about?] If you do have XP fax
and a fax capable modem then you'll probably have to uninstall and reinstall
the XP fax program.

have a fax capable modem then WinFax will not work.

If you do have Win XP fax installed and a anolog modem cabable of faxing and
is compatable with XP you may have to unistall and reinstall WinFax program.

I meant if you DO NOT have a fax capable modem then WinFax will not work.
