Unable to sync .... weird problem

The modem is a Plusnet supplied Binatone DSL model.

The modem cannot sync with the exchange for more than a few moments at a
time, but not on it's own ... read on.

Somewhat oddly, when starting a standard DUN connection, the DSL modem
will sync with the exchange for just a few seconds, before going back to
"NO SIGNAL / TRAINING"

When Windows XP is just sitting idle though, the modem is always at a
"NO SIGNAL / TRAINING" state.

However, on trying the modem on a different computer (laptop) there was
full synchronisation, which i guess rules out a line fault.

I think that there is a connection (no pun intended) between the DUN
connection allowing the DSL connection to sync for a few seconds, and
that 'something, somewhere' in Windows XP is preventing the modem from
maintaining sync, or even getting there in the first place before a DUN
connection is initiated.

A previous install of Norton Personal Firewall was removed because it
was preventing internet access for some reason, and so i don't know if
this has damaged/corrupted those files which the DSL connection needs to
be able to sync?

Could it be a TCP/IP error of sorts, or maybe a winsock issue?

Mcafee anti-virus 7 was also installed on the machine (now removed to
try and eliminate it) which reported a change to winsock had been noted
after the modem was installed.

What files does XP use to sync the modem, as obviously it hasn't even
dialled into the ISP at this stage, so i can't see it being a TCP/IP
fault?

Could i (should i) try SFC.exe to see if that uncovers anything?
Could, would Mcafee/Norton have overwritten/changed/damaged any files
that would be need to sync the modem?

There are no firewalls in place.

If anyone can throw some help into the arena, it would be most
appreciated.

Or on Thurs, it's a format and reinstall .....

I think it's worth a look at your channel settings.

VPI= 0,
VCI= 38,
service type
authentication mode
encapsulation mode
username
password

If any one of these settings is wrong the modem won't connect. All this
has to be established first before any TCP/IP settings take effect.
I don't know the settings for plusnet, but you can get them off the PC
that works. Or if anyone has them to hand on this newsgroup I'm sure
they'll add them to your post.

Your problem could be power saving.

In Windows 2000 and XP there is a setting that could allow the system to
power-down the USB ports during use

Under Network adapters, click the USB Modem icon and then select Power
Management, The box "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save
power" must be unchecked.

Hope this helps

That's just it, it will sync, but only for a few seconds when the DUN is
initiated to a Freeserve connection.

This isn't that modem won't connect when trying to 'dial' into the ISP,
it's that it won't sync to the exchange in the first place don't forget.

Is it installed correctly on the PC? The PC still needs to send all the
settings to the modem before it will sync. If it works ok on another PC
it must be the way it is installed/setup on that PC. Are you using the
same phone socket thst it worked on before?

Is it installed correctly on the PC?

Yes, completely recognised with no issues in Device Manager.
Installed flawlessly using the supplied CD.
The PC still needs to send all the settings to the modem before it will sync.

OK, i will double check the settings, but it is the Plusnet default
install that was used on both machines, so i am doubtful that this is
where the problem lies. There's no harm in looking though.

Absolutely. So what is preventing the modem from syncing if it's not the
settings?

Which files does Windows utilise when syncing the modem?
Does winsock come into it, TCP/IP, DUN .... ???
Are you using the same phone socket thst it worked on before?

Yes, i simply installed the modem to an XP Pro laptop.
Everything else - the socket, the modem, the filter - was the same.

I recommend a mini-sized and powerful Personal Firewall:GoldTach Pro .

This security tool runs efficiently and stably with only 1.2 MB size. It can
stop hackers ,protected e-mail safely, block ads pop and cookie etc.

You can download it freely here, http://www.goldtach.com/download.htm

Hi,

Have you got the latest service pack installed? There are some issues
with this modem and some of the original releases of XP I
understand...

Bang up-to-date as it happens, and did a fresh re-install of XP today
just to see if it was windows related, still no joy.

I'm starting to wonder if it's the VIA chipset rearing its ugly head, as
i did briefly get this thing working on an external powered USB hub, and
was able to download a load of stuff before a restart was required which
scuppered the whole thing again.

I have posted to plusnet.feedback on the matter, re : swapping for an
internal PCI ...

Still, i have to try the latest 4in1 drivers mind you, but then it will
be a case of having to try a different method of connection...

But have you installed all the multitudes of updates? This is what
was asked (there is at least 2 which directly affect USB functionality
& that's on top of service pack 1, which has it's own patch)

Well next time save them to disk & then you don't have to keep on
downloading them...
