Unable to start and stop services

I am running af W2K advanced server and have started
to expirence a problem during the last 3-4 days. Rebooting
does not help.

I can't stop nor start any service. I get an error message
after a long time saying that the service did not respond
in a timely fashion. The status in the services manager
then changes to either "starting" or "stopping" and never
leaves this state.

I am not able to relate this problem to any changes I
have made on the server. Any help will be very much
apprechiated.

Yes, Norten Antivirus does not detect anything. I have
tried to check using a webbased virusscanner from
Trendmicro to see if the virus somehow disables Norton
Antivirus, but I cant browse the web either. No problems
pinging sites and doing nslookups, but IE reports the
site is unavailable. In addition I just discovered that
I can't run Add/Remove programs.

I am currently running af sfc /scannow and earlier today
I executed sfc /scannow... Not too hopefull about these
steps, so any suggestions are most welcome.

Does anyone know of a virus causing this kind of
problems. It would be much easier to confirm/reject
that theory if I could look up the charateristics of
a specific virus and then check my server for those
charateristics.

Check the Status column for your services and see if there is a service that
is set to anything other than "Started" or blank. A service that is hanging
may be causing other services to hang.

I found the services causing the problem. 3 services
related to our anti-virus solution had the status
starting or stopping. After disabling, uninstalling
and re-installing things seems to run OK again.
