Good morning,

I am trying to setup a home network with 2 PC's and two
laptops. All of these computers connect to the internet
via Cisco 831 router. Currently I seem to have two
problems, that may or may not be related (probably are).
I can't ping any of the computers from any other
computer, but I can ping my gateway and I do have access
to the net from any of the switch ports. I don't see
anything in running-config that should keep me from being
able to ping but it isn't happening. I have also tried
to run the networking wizard and sometimes it says that
it worked, sometimes it fails and says that some error
occured, but I never do get it to install so that I can
see other hosts or printers. Any help is appreciated,
whether its in the form of a fix or a referral. I'm not
choosy.

Thanx,
Mike

Is Internet Connection Firewall running? If so, disable
it. You can get there by Start|Control Panel|Classic
View|Network Connections|Local Area Connection. Right
mouse button on the Local Area Connection and choose
properties. In the properties dialog box choose the
Advanced Tab and uncheck "Protect my computer and network
by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the
internet". Make sure file and printer sharing is
enabled. Check out Microsoft Knowledge Base article
258717 for the baic principle of creating a small
network. It may not apply to your OS but the fundamentals
are the same for Microsoft peer to peer networking.

I suppose that the wizard turned on the firewall because
I never did, but I found it checked on all my computers.
Turned it off and they can all play together. Thanks for
the help.
