Unable to send and recieve

I just installed Outlook 2003, successfully imported mail
from a PST file, and added my email accounts. I try to
set my send and receive options by going to Tools-
Options->"mail setup tab"->"send/receive button" and an
error dialogue pops up saying:

"The operation failed. An object could not be found."

What object? How can this be remedied?

Clicking on the send/receive button on the main window
pane generates the same message. I would like to check
my mail.

I have now also tried "repairing the installation" from
the Office 2003 installation CD. This did not work even
though a successful repair message was returned.

I'm able to compose email messages, but when I click on
send, the "Outlook Send/Receive Progress" window
immediately pops up and shows the error tab, which has
the message: "Task 'MyEmail - Sending' reported error
(0x8004010F): 'The operation failed. An object could not
be found.'"

Can anybody diagnose this problem or offer a solution?

Thanks,
-Michael

what type of account do you have?

Did you upgrade from an older version of outlook? if so, make a new
profile...

You can also try these steps...
Make sure the Contact folder is enabled as an email address book. Right
click the Contacts folder, choose Properties then Outlook Address Book. Is
the box to enable as email address book is checked?

If this is grayed out...

Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change existing directories or
address book. Is the Outlook Address Book present? If it isn't listed, add
it and close and restart Outlook. If it is listed, then remove it and close
then restart Outlook and repeat these steps to add it.

I have several different types of accounts. I have an
IMAP account (which is able to receive) and two POP3
accounts which are not able to receive. All accounts are
not able to send because of the bug.

I did not upgrade from an older version of outlook. I
installed the complete Office 2003 Professional product
(without Business Contact Manager).

You were correct; I did not have an address book present.
I followed your directions to establish an "Outlook
Address Book" which is my Contacts list (or somehow
linked). Everything looks like you said it should,
however, the solution did not work. Do you have any other
suggestions?

Thanks,
-Michael

Here's an article that I found somewhere else that
describes my problem (although I have not uninstalled
Outlook 2003 nor installed other versions of Outlook):

http://www.experts-
exchange.com/Applications/MS_Office/Outlook/Q_20839277.htm

For the record, I am not working with Exchange on any
level.

I'm narrowing down the search criteria for this problem,
but have not found a solution yet. I'm hopeful.

did you reboot? the error is somehow related to the address book service -
maybe removing it and adding it back will help.

Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change existing directories or
address book- remove it and close then restart Outlook and add it back.

Yes, I agree with Jon - please respond if you were able to fix problem. Thank you in advance.

Just got off the phone with Dell. They found a MS KB
bulletin # 312354
Basically it says to delete the profile, and recreate. I
didnt look up the KB article, so I really dont know what
it says, this is what Dell told me.
I just know that it did work for me. I did also notice
that the Business Contact Manager wizard that starts when
it first runs, was completed, and before I dont remember
it doing as much as it did this next time through.
Hope this helps someone!

Jon

I have not found a solution yet because my hard drive was displaying some strange behavior. I sent it in for an under-warranty repair. I will be trying this all again when the drive is returned to me. Regardless, I'll keep this group informed of the solution.

I received my replacement hard drive yesterday and re-installed Windows XP Pro and Office 2003. When installing Outlook, instead of skipping the phase where you add email addresses, I added a dummy one (I canceled this phase with the last install). I think this might be the solution because a progress dialogue box appears for an instant and says that it installs something. I'm guessing it is the object we are looking for.

So my solution is:

1) Uninstall Office 2003 (or just Outlook 2003, I haven't verified this).
2) Reinstall Outlook 2003
3) When opening outlook 2003 for the first time, you will be prompted to add an email address. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP! It doesn't matter if it's a working address or not, just add an email address.
4) Import your old settings and data
5) Everything should be good!

I hope this helps.
-Michael
