I have 3 computers running xp home, 2 connected by cable and a third by
wireless. They all connect to the web through a usrobotics 9108 broadband
gateway without problem. I can download email to all 3. I have enabled file
and printer sharing on all 3, but if I try to view my workgroup computers I
get an error message: "My Network Places" " X Mshome is not accessible.
You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

OK "
All computers are fired up using "administrator" and there are no other
people using our computers. One is called "jimsdesktop" another "jimslaptop"
and the third is named "sue"

I have run the "network setup wizard" several times on all computers, shut
them all down, etc. All to no avail. Can you suggest anything else?

Sounds like name resolution or computer browser issue. Can you ping each other by IP? Or check this search result.

Jim,

I'd check the NetBT setting, and look for misconfigured or overlooked personal
firewalls.

Dear Robert
Thank you. I pinged 127.0.0.1 (My local host address) with good result. I
pinged 192.168.1.1 (The router address) with good result. However, when I
ping 192.168.1.2 (MyLaptop address), 192.168.1.3 (MyDesktop address) or my
wireless laptop on 192.168.1.4, I get 100% loss.

I would check the firewall first.

Dear Bob

I turned off Norton Internet Security (which has my firewall) on all
computers, but to no avail. I also did a hard reset on my router, and
reloaded all settings. I can connect to the internet on all computers but
cannot see the other computers on the network. On my desktop, the window is
blank. On the others, I get the error message. By the way, I log on to all
computer by just turning on. There has been no need to have a "log on"
security screen.

Dear Chuck

Sorry not to reply earlier, but I have been looking at the refs you
suggested. I believe I have done all that is suggested. I have done a hard
reset on my router, to no avail. Also, following Pracitcallynetworked.com's
advice, I ran "regedit" and set my desktop to "yes" in "MaintainServerList"
and "No" on the laptop. The desktop gives me a clear window when I ask to
see my workgroup computers, the laptop the error screen. I do not "log on"
to any of my computers, just turn them on (I don't have a problem with
security, and its just an annoyance)

OK, Jim,

The next step is to start diagnosing the problem. Look at logs from "browstat
status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation",
from each computer. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

And the less changes you make, while you diagnose the problem, the easier it
will be.

Dear Bob

Sorry to be so long - I've been in Australia for 5 days. I did a clean boot
(disable all on selective) on all three computers. My usrobotics 9108
gateway is on 192.168.1.1, my desktop on 192.168.1.3, my laptop on
192.168.1.5 and my wife's laptop on 192.168.1.4

I successfully pinged all three computers to the gateway, to 192.168.1.2,
and to "localhost". But none would ping 192.168.1.3 or 4 or 5.

So, all can access the internet, but none can see each other on the network.

OK, Jim,

You have 2 challenges here. First, here's a possible one. nVidia nForce.

Here's a definite problem - IPX/SPX and NetBEUI on your desktop.

Start by cleaning up the protocol stack on your computer - get rid of IPX/SPX
and NetBEUI.

Are all 3 computers in "MSHome" workgroup? Check your NetBT settings, and all
personal firewalls, for consistency too.

Hi Chuck

I have checked my Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, and I do not have
"Network Access Manager"

Next, I removed IPX/SPX and NetBEUI from my desktop (It is not present on my
Laptop)

However, now, instead of a blank screen when I try to "view my workgroup
computers" on my Desktop, I get, instead, the error message:
My Network Places

Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

So, I am a little further along, but not there yet.

Take it one step at a time, Jim. That message is generally caused by Browser
SMBs being blocked, generally by an inconsistent NetBT setting, or by a
misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall.

OK, now we're down to visibility inconsistency. Just run a complete set of
"browstat status" and look for a segmented LAN.

Then, we'll try CDiag.

Take the following code (everything INSIDE the "#####" lines). Please DO NOT
include ANY portion of the "#####" lines. (Please verify computer names and ip
addresses).

1. Open Notepad.
2. Highlight then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and
Paste (Ctrl-V) into Notepad.
3. Examine the contents of Notepad. Is the text, as copied, readable? It
won't run well, if it's not easily readable.
4. If the text is not easily read, then:
* Stretch the sides of the Notepad window. If this improves things,
then continue with Step 5.
* Close Notepad, as is (do not bother to save anything).
* Open Notepad.
* Under Format, reverse the setting for Word Wrap. If it is unchecked,
check it. If checked, uncheck it.
* Return to Step 2.

5. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
6. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root
folder "C:\".
7. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
8. Wait patiently.
9. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

Dear Chuck

I have discovered that Sue's Laptop is actually running xp professional. I
followed the instuctions in advanced-windows-networking, and obtained no more
progress in the network places and got this printout:

But, I then had some success! I changed the personal firewall settings on
all 3 computers in Norton Internet Security under Trust Control to "Add"
192.168.1. and then 2 3 4 and 5. Now, from my laptop I can see the shared
files on Sue's laptop (and also on my laptop!), but not on the desktop. On
neither the desktop nor Sue's laptop can I see anything

So, a little progress!

Regards, Jim

* Open Notepad.
* Under Format, reverse the setting for Word Wrap. If it is unchecked,
check it. If checked, uncheck it.
* Return to Step 2.

You have 3 computers that can't ping themselves. What do these 3 computers have
in common, besides geographical location?

Dear Chuck

Sorry to be a few days -work and family and things! I have looked at your
references and changed a few settings in Norton, but with intermittent
success. The 3 computers have in common Norton Internet Security, which, I
guess, is the reason they cannot all see each other. What do you think?
