Unable to see installed programs

I wont to uninstall a program from from my pc but when I go to "control
Panel" click on "install or remove programs" I just get a blank page, no
torch waving around or hour glass, the hard drive light is on but steady not
flickering, If I go down to "windows compontants i\that window opens
immediatly and I can do what ever I want. If I reclick on installed/remove
programs it just shows a blank page, with the messege "wait while populating
etc" but nothing happens. I'm running XP pro on a hp Pavilion 8960 which is
about 4 years old.
