unable to see computers on the network

I've recently set up a home network. One computer is
running XP home edition the other Windows 98SE. One
computer is hardwired to a cable modem via a netgear
wireless router and the second goes wireless to the
router. When I originally set up the network I could
access the Windows 98 computer via the other but not the
other way around. I was able to transfer files from the 98
SE unit to the XP unitbut now I can't find the computer
running 98SE at all, and it does not appear in "my network
places".

Both computers can ping each other successfully which I
assume means they most be connected somehow and both
computers can access the internet via the cable modem with
no difficulty.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get these two
computers to recognize each other on the network?

I have almost the same problem. I have eathernet not wireless connektion and a switsch D-link 804.

Assuming that you have cabling (wireless) working between the
computers, your problem is most likely network protocol. Win9x
computers natively use Netbeui, and WinNT2KXP use NBT (Netbios over
TCP/IP).

Enable NBT on the Win9x computer, and you should be OK.

Start here for a good tutorial, with details:

Once you get the protocols matching, make sure you don't have a
firewall on any of the computers blocking name resolution. In order
for the master browser to allow you to "see" each computer from
another computer, any firewalls you might use on the LAN must trust
all other computers.

Once you get all the computers "seeing" each other, remember to login
to each computer using an account / password identical to one setup on
any computer you wish to access files on. Don't hit Esc when starting
the Win9x computer. That should enable you to access the WinXP
computer from the Win98 computer.

BTW, posting articles with your email address in plain text is not a
good idea. That practice will get you lots of unwanted email, and
viruses in attachments. Learn to munge your email address.

i appreciate your input. i tried the web site you
suggested and went through the steps and have the same
situation. I can ping both computers and both access the
internet but they don't see each other on the network.

the odd thing to me is that it was working fine for a few
days. I was able to transfer files and then it just
stopped working.

I've been reading a few things that say I need to have the
same user name and password on both computers. Is that so?

That's assuming you disable the Guest account on the WinXP computer
(which you should do anyway).
