While on the internet using IE 6, I have tried to search using the search icon at the top and it at first just told me I couldn't connect to the internet. I was already connected and now its just telling me that IE has to close as an error has occurred. Anyone know how I can get this corrected?

Make sure you have the latest fixes for IE and OS. That's
the first step.

You may want to check if the site the search option is pointing to is alive (active) or not. Or you can try switching to another search engine.

Here is how;
Select "Search" from the standard buttons tool bar in IE 6.0.
On the window what opens, select "customize".
In customize you will be given a array of options to choose from, but the one we want is “Find a Web Pageâ€. Here you are shown witch search engine you are using or would like to use. All you have to do is check the box with the engine you want to use , select the up arrow to move it to the top of the list, and then select OK at the bottom of the screen.

If this fails you may have to reinstall (repair) IE 6 using Add and remove programs from the Windows control panel.

If you want to take it a step further, go to google.com or yahoo.com and get their search engine tool bar. It works wonders for me.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, but now soon as I hit the search icon, it states that it has to close on me and send a report. I can't even get to that part now. Thanks

may sound domb but you've rebooted... right? Also, try to reinstall it. Did the search button ever work? if it did then do a system restore. Microsft windows XP came with a tool called system resore that, basicaly resotores the system to a poin in time of your choosing (like going back in time). Make sure you don't go too far do, you might end up with a Vanilla XP (basic). System restor will undo any changes you made after the restore point. Meaning that if you want to restore your pc from yesterday, and you installed a new program today, you will loose this installation as you are litteraly going back to yesterdays setup.

Try download google or yahoo search bar. If you can't work with out the search button then reinstall IE6 or do a system restore.

The only thing I remember is when you clicked on it, a dog came out and asked you what you wanted to search for. I logged onto my husbands site a few minutes ago and I got the dog. I made it go away and I now I screwed up his now. I thought you only got the dog, so I never used it. I tried it at work and I like it and want to do that on my machine. Now, to reinstall it. I guess I do that from my windows XP disc and do I have to uninstall it first. What about all my favorites, do I loose them? Sorry to be such an idiot. Thanks again.

Save your favorites by going in to IE and the File menu. The selct Import and export. This will give you a simple wizard that will gide you towards exporting your favorites to a file.

Now go to the add and remove programs and try to uninstall IE and reinstall it. If given the option, choose repair.

I forgot to mention but, is your computer running Windows XP Service Pack 1?

Yes it is. The updates are done automatically. I used to have the dog as the search companion. And thank you for all your help.

Hi it is fixed. I put in the XP disk and from there I unchecked the IE box, so it uninstalled it. Then I checked the box and reinstall IE and it works. Thanks again.
