Unable to run windows Explorer

J

Jules

Hi

I am running XP Home SP2. I have a major problem that I think may relate to
my file associations.

It boots up rather slowly into normal mode. Once I am booted I can't get
My Computer to display anything when I double click on it - nothing happens.
If I right click on the START button I do not get an option to run Windows
Explorer and if I enter START | RUN |CMD I cannot get into the DOS window.

If I try to run Windows Explorer by using START | RUN | EXPLORER.EXE nothing
happens.

The only thing that still seems to work is Internet Explorer.

I can boot into safe mode but I get the same results.

Is there any way round this problem?

Regards

Jules

Hi Jules,

It could be a virus, spyware, or a combination thereof. I would start by
running a full system scan in Safe mode with an updated antivirus program.
Free virus removal tools:

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/8/lng/us/tpl/v5/nid/3001#3001

Also, you may use this free on-line scanner:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Many are best run in Safe mode to minimize interference. Most will resist
removal in normal mode where they are active.

How to start in Safe mode:
http://www.rickrogers.org/fixes.htm#Safe mode

Emergency system tools:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_emerutils.htm

Then, run scans with these:

AdawareII www.lavasoft.de
Spybot www.safer-networking.org

From MVP Richard Harper on cleaning up malware infested systems:
http://rgharper.mvps.org/cleanit.htm

This one can help you avoid these programs from being installed in the first
place:
Spyware Blaster: www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software

If it still acts funky after the cleanup, click start/run, type SFC /SCANNOW
and click ok. This will validate the system file set and replaced those that
are damaged. You may be prompted for your WinXP CD.
