Please help! I'm afraid my hard drive may be in trouble:
Regardless of whether from within Windows (XP Pro) or from
command line at via restart/F8, it never gets past
verifying files, whereupon I get a bluescreen telling me
that the process is aborting to prevent possible damage,
and then the following:
*** STOP: 0X0000007E (0X0000005,0XF8971540)
*** TBSPUD.SYS

-followed by an `address', `base', and `Datestamp' that
change with each new attempt.

-I would like to defrag this disk (it needs it), but I'm
afraid of accidentally damaging it in this present
condition.
-Would any of you MS/MVP's out there be able to help me? I
would be most grateful. Thanks

cmd line in F8 isnt a valid windows operation for defrag.
Go to start,type:cmd
At the curser type:CHKDSK C: /F
Do the restart it asks, then type:EXIT
Restart computer,back on desktop,open cmd,type:Defrag C:
C: being the hd,when its thru type:EXIT

It appears that the problem is with a certain version of the drivers for
the Turtle Beach sound card. The users that participated in the thread
referenced below, had the same error and the same problem with chkdsk. They
fixed the problem by updating the drivers and software for the card via a
download from the manufacturer's website:

( here's a tiny url if you have trouble with the long one wrapping:

-Thanks, Sharon; it sounds like that's it. Besides
interfering with chkdsf/f, the volume control occasionally
goes its own way, as well (sounds like some ghost is
fiddling with the control). Its software is pretty old
(pre-XP, brought over from my previous Dell), and
hopefully this will fix both problems. Thanks again.
