using powerpoint xp, i find the transparent fills i create
can't seem to be printed with any transparency. What I get
is a solid fill. Is there any way to solve this problem?
..

Is this a printer setting problem or a software problem
with ppt?

This a printer setting. It can possibly be overcome by updating your printer
drivers or printing on another printer. If possible, you can print your file
to a PDF and then print the PDF. Or lastly, you can save your presentation
as .jpg's (SAVE AS >> JPG) and import the images into a new presentation
(INSERT >> PHOTO ALBUM) and print that.

Tx very much Troy...I'm using an HP deskjet 948c and
believe I've got the latest drivers for that so I'm not
sure how to rectify the situation. I don't really want to
migrate to another file format and wish to print the ppt
files as is.

Although I do not have any concrete study results, this seems to be somewhat
more prevalent among HP DeskJet printers. It is likely a printer driver
issue vs. PowerPoint rendering, but I do not know this for a fact. It is
also been suggested that it could be a system resource problem.

The way I got around this with my HP printer was to purchase the Hand-Out
Wizard add-in to PowerPoint. It does my 9 slides/page hand-outs perfectly
(20 to 30 pages /wk). The transparent shapes are printed correctly.

Tx all for your help...guess will have to learn to live
with it or work around it.
Have a blessed and peaceful new year.

There are work-arounds.

First double check all the drives and service packs to make sure everything
is up to date. try it to make sure the issue has not been resolved.

You can then export to Word, where the transparency issue with printing is
not a problem.

Or you can save the presentation as image files (1 file to a slide) in a
separate directory and print the images from there using any imaging program
(PhotoEd, PhotoShop, etc.). Again, the transparency works as it should
using this method.

Or lastly, you can use the HOW link I referred you to previously.

Any of these work-arounds will resolve the issue.

As a side note, does anyone have any better data on the HP/transparency
issue? Or would this be a good question to pose to the group?

If it's a transparent gradient fill, there may be no way to print it, but
you might be able to make it fly like so:

Choose Insert, Duplicate Slide to make a copy of your slide in case this
doesn't work
Select the shape with the problem fill and any shapes beneath it.
Press Ctrl+C to copy them.
Press DEL to delete the selected shapes
Choose Edit, Paste Special and choose PNG as the paste type.
