Unable to restart or shutdown

Lately I have been having trouble restating or even shutting down my system
without actually unplugging and having it start up. I run XP and have a Dell
XPS410. None of the programs seem to run slow and when I go into the Task Mgr
there seem to be quite a few programs running such as svchost.exe and others
that are either under the syste user name or my own. It doesn't seem that
most of these should even be running. Any ideas or do you need more info?
Thanks

"It doesn't seem that most of these should even be running."

Then close the ones you think shouldn't be running.

When you're ready to seriously tackle your problem, post again and
describe in detail the "trouble" you are having. Remember, we can't see
your monitor, so we're depending on you to describe your problem fully
and accurately.

I have closed all of the ones that shouldn't be running. That was the first
thing I did. Now, seriously, if you can be a bit more patient and answer
questions posted in a reasonable manner maybe we can progress. I don't know
why you assume I am not serious about this. As I have said the CPU will not
shut down or restart when needed. It sits there doing nothing. I have to
unplug it to restart it.

My point is that your statement...

"It doesn't seem that most of these should even be running."

....is nonsensical. If you knew what processes shouldn't be running, you
would have ended them. If you don't know what any processes shouldn't be
running, if any, how can you draw that conclusion?

Many people in these newsgroups get themselves into trouble - or more
trouble - because they make decisions about things about which they have
little understanding. I used to be president of that club.

You are better served by describing your problem in enough detail that
someone hundreds of miles away can diagnose and solve your problem.

In your case, what we know so far, based on your description, is that
you have some version of Windows XP and that your computer does not
shutdown.

Does Windows not shutdown, or does it shutdown but your computer does
not power off?

could be an issue
with the registry.

you see when the
computer shuts down
it attempts to write
to the registry.

if the write fails, then
when you next boot up,
you will experience a
problem loading the
registry.

the above is only one
of the possibilities.

This can be due to a flakky power supply or an overheating system/Burnt
Thermal Compunds can do this even from a cold start.
If you savy enough open the case and blow the dust out with a compress air
can and try to make sure the power cables are fit firmly into their sockets.
Also make sure the Press Button not stuck in the case causing a restart!
If that too much then take to the Local repair shop for a chuck up LOL
HTH,

you're such a moron
and clearly unskilled
with validating the
correlating kb.

don't troll again.

That was the dumbest answer I ever read in this newsgroup. What is written
in the registry?
