Somehow one of my hard drive partitions got a name (shown in My
Computer, Windows Explorer) that I don't want.

But, I can't seem to change it! Why not? What is preventing this?

Thanks

what have you tried already?

I selected the partition name in My Computer. Went to File>Rename.
Would not take a change. I right-clicked on the name and chose
'properties'. Would not take a change.

I repeated the above in Windows Explorer. Would not take a change.

(WXP PRO SP2)

Thanks

won't open filename field to edit?
or won't save name?

any error messages?

too many characters or incorrect characters (8!@$% etc)?

Allows me to enter the new name but ignores change when I press enter.
No error messages. Won't even work for a 1 character label.

Thanks

i thought some people had problems using more than 13 characters.
maybe that's why it is giving you grief about changing.

how about using label command at command prompt?

have you ever edited the registry? would you feel comfortable with that?

I agree
how about using label command at command prompt?

No, but if I can find syntax, I will try it.

Yes, and Yes.

I tried the label command. Interesting.

I can only re-label the partition up to 11 characters (which we both
know is W98's limit). The interesting thing is - I can change the
label (using the label command) to anything I want, within the
11-char limit, But no matter what I change the label to, it remains
'messages part 1'. So, somehow, I was able to label the partition
that way originally, but now I am paying the penalty of not being
able to change it.

I am going to look into the registry next.

Thanks

I found two occurrences of 'messages part 1' in the registry. I
changed them both to 'messages-1', and they seemed to be accepted in
the registry. In fact, a subsequent registry-search verifies that
that is true.

Yet 'My Computer' & 'Windows Explorer' STILL show the partition name
as 'messages part 1'. How about that! I even re-booted to be sure
the registry change was in effect.

Oh well..

Thanks

Why not right-click and choose Rename? :-)

Windows Explorer and My Computer are the same program.

I'm sorry

I wanted to created multiple FAT32 partitions on a separate hard
drive, from my WXP c drive. The reason is that I wanted those
partitions to be usable by a W98 c drive on my brother's machine.
I planned to mount it as external on his machine.

So, I created the FAT32 partitions on that separate drive from my
WXPPRO on c drive. It does what I plan to do, except for the
confusing way it handles this particular partition label.

I think I will just forget the label problem. It doesn't seem to hurt
anything, and the drive does work for both my WXP and his W98.
