In effort to study for my MCSA I've set up a small AD
system. It consists of a two Win2K Adv. Servers (one the
DC) and one Win2KPro. I've been trying to use the ability
of adding a domain user from the non-DC machines. I've
added the Admin tool pack from the server install CD.
When I start Active Dir Users and Groups, I get the
message: "Naming information could not be located because:
the server is not operational". When I look this up on
the knowledge base it describes disabling the Winsock
Proxy; the HOW TO says to do this in the control panel but
there is no proxy listed. Can some one please give an
idea of what to try next? Is there something in the DC
that must be configured?

What are your DNS settings on your client and servers. They must all point
to your internal DNS server not to some other DNS server. Verify that
nameresolution works by using nslookup.

Matjaz, I looked at my DNS settings; On the tcp/ip
properties dialog both "obtain IP.." and "obtain DNS ..."
automatically are checked. DHCP is working. I was
assuming the DNS server address would likewise be
availible. In any case I added a DNS address on the
Advanced TCP/IP dialog; I was then abel to use the AD
tools remotely. Any idea why the client dosen't get the
DNS automatically?

Thanks, --- Mike

Check with your DHCP server, that it is assigning DNS configuration ? What
DHCP server are you using ? Check your Server options in dhcp if they have
DNS settings.

Matjaz, that was it! I had not looked at the DHCP options
before; your pointer to it was the key. --- Thank you for
your excellent help. --- Mike

Highly recommend you do not DHCP IP's to your server.
They should be static and point to themselves for DNS
resolution. Then, put your ISP's DNS IP's in the
forwarders for external resolution.
