unable to recognize updates

I have installed the IE6 service pack update from the
windows update site, now i get that error for opening the
webpages with java, 404 webpage not found. I tried to
install the fix, and it says must install service pack. I
went to remove the service pack, and it says has already
been removed. When i go to reinstall the service pack,
says i already have it. Besides formating, and starting
over, how can i resolve this. OPSYS is winxpro
