Unable to recognize any USB Drivers (that would formerly)

I have a valid XP-SP2 with all aupdates from MS. From a couple of days ago, I
can't attatch my FDD SmartDisk Floppy (USB) or ANY other device that
WindowsXP automatically recognized through the hardware wizard.
How does it (not) works:
1 - After plugging in, the wizzard appears and reccomends me to let him do
the installation.
2 - After a few moments, a message appears saying that it was unable to do
so, although I still have my Windows supposedly ok. outrora

Another problem regarding this same effect: When I try to add a Windows
component, it tells me that it cannot open the specified file in the
\windows\i386 folder (although the file actually is there!)

Expecting some help, thanks and bye

Start>Run>type DISKMGMT.MSC and click OK
A window will open and should show the Smartdisk as
a removable drive. You can assign it a drive letter such
as a "F" drive, etc. You can click Help>Disk Management>
Adding a new disk.

It didn't work.
What happens with every single plug and play device (that formely
automatically installed in my Win-XP system) is, that the "Welcome to the
Found New Hardware Wizard" window appears. In it, says:
"This wizard helps you install software for: MITSUMI USB FDD.
If your hardware came with an installation CD or floppy disk, insert it now.
What do you want the wizard to do?
- Install the software automatically (Recommended)
- Install from a list or specifi location (Advanced)......"
Thanks again..

Check out if the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DevicePath
points to %SystemRoot%\inf

Furthermore you can try to delete the file
C:\WINDOWS\inf\infcache.1

Thanks for the answer. It resolved the first issue but not the second one. I
still cannot add Windows components installation when using the "add or
remove programs"in control panel.
For example, when I try to add a Window component:
- Accessories and utilities / accessories / character map, after a while a
window ("Copy Error") appears with this message:
"setup cannot copy the file ....kanji_2.uc> (for example). Ensure that the
location specified below is correct, or change it......."
But the location is correct (C:\windows\i386), because when I run the
Windows Explorer I find the file actually there!
What is it? Some kind of denied priviledge? Another problem?
I thought it was related to the first one (that you helped me resolve).
What should I do?
Thanks again

The default path it stored in 'SourcePath' under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
but this is the default only and XP should ask for and accept
a different one too.
No more ideas...

OK, the register was already with the value, so it must be something
different. What about the win51lic that should be in my system (and I can't
find it? Does it have something to do with all of this?)

This was a file that couldn't be found when I tried to run the nLite program
(that supposedly creates a new CD with my original windows installation and
the SP2 modifications.

Thanks
