Hello,

Using Excel 2000 (9.0.6926 SP3) I receive the error message "Unable to read
file" when clicking "yes" to update links to another workbook (source file
to retrieve client data).

We have been using these Excel workbooks for a few weeks now and there have
been no modifications.
File 1 (source file which contains the origianal client data) = 6.72 Mb
File 2 (file that we are opening and that cannot read File 1) = 2.41 Mb

The error message started this week and doesn't happen all the time. Another
funny thing is that if I open File 1 first then open File 2, no error
appears and the linking works great.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Ruan

Hi

To retrieve data from a corrupted excel file you can use Word. Startu
Word and open the excel file that is corrupted. Word will get the dat
without the fomulas. Then copy back the data to a new excel file.

Hopefully this is what you're looking for.

Where did you get this information? Why would they want to take a file that is
working and potentially corrupt it by opening it in Word?

Stephen,

I don't have a problem opening File 1. I have a problem linking to this
file. And the weird thing is, is that I don't always get an error message
when linking.

Sorry, then I misunderstood your question.

In the past I had data problems and it took, in my case, a long time t
find the problem. The excel file could be somewhere corrupted o
whatever the problem is. That's why I recommended the Word solution
just to get a clean file and start all over again.

Hi Ruan

Microsoft knows this is a problem. Their wookaround is to
do exactly what you have been doing. They suggest that
you open all the linked Excel workbooks before you open
the workbook that contains the links. I guess they find
this acceptable.

Hello Richard,

Thanks for your response. So Microsoft don't have an idea what might cause
it? This is a big problem for me, as I have some excel documents that link
to 25 different excel files to extract data through terminal services.

Anyways, I guess there is nothing I can do.

Thanks

Hi I am also getting the same error "Unable to read file".
In my case I have to export my report in Excel. I had written code in C# by passing array in session variable and accessing it by data table. It works fine when there is small data but if I am accessing large data like 2000 records and above then it’s giving the error unable to read file. Can anybody help me to come out with this problem?
