Hello,
After placing clips on my storyboard I wanted to preview some of the
thransitions but when I hit play or double click on the selected one the
preveiw monitor just stays black and the slider button jumps to the end. To
preveiw a look I have to put it down in the storyboard and then play the clip
associated with it.
Has anyone had this problem? Is there a fix for it?
Thanks in advance.

You are probably missing 2 JPG files necessary to preview transitions the
way you are trying to.
They are located at: '/Program Files/Movie Maker/Shared'
The files you need are Sample1.JPG and Sample2.JPG
If they are missing or corrupt the transition can't preview without being in
the timeline because it has no pictures to use for the preview.
If they are missing you should be able to copy them from the /i386 folder in
your root folder.

Thank you for your reply!
I checked the shared folder and the sample pics were in there. I suppose
they are corrupt. I tried copying the other two samples from the /i386 folder
and they didn't show up as pictures just the regular square note looking
icons. I called Dell but they want 100.00 for the software tech support! So I
told them to send me the program on CD, maybe I can uninstall it then
re-install it and hope that fixes the problem. I can't think of anything else
to do. Do you think that might help? Thanks again for all the trouble ya went
through.
Can ya tell I'm a novice at this! LOL

Reinstalling SP2 and WMM2.1 would likely work yes.
Did you try double clicking the sample1 & 2 JPG's to see if they open in the
picture viewer? This will tell you if the files are corrupt or if there is a
different problem with WMM.

Yes, I was able to see the sample pictures in the picture viewer, it must be
another problem.
I hate to sound like an idiot but how do I reinstall SP2 and WMM2.1? I
looked in the "Add/Remove" programs in the control Panel and Wmm2.1 isn't
even there! I can't figure out how to get the program or where it comes
from. I was going to order the SP2 CD from here, is it on there? I also told
Dell to send me a CD of my installed programs but I'm not sure if it will be
on that either! Sheesh this is getting complicated LOL! Do I have to
uninstall the programs before reinstalling them?
Sorry to ask so many questions but......
Thank you again for your help.

Hi Wojo,
I really appreciate all the help. I did everything on the web site as you
suggested but it still didn't work. The only thing left to do is to reinstall
the SP2. I went to the Windows XP forum for help with reinstalling
pre-installed SP2 and got no help, just rudeness but thats another story. I
did try something else though, I copied the WMM2 folder from my other
computer where it worked fine, renamed it and opened it in my notebook and it
did open fine but again no preveiws. So it looks like it is something outside
the program? I don't know anything about this stuff. Can I re-install SP2
without uninstalling it?
Thanks one more time

Exactly like John said.
If you can see the JPG's then that obviously isn't the problem but
reinstalling could still solve the issue but first I would try reregistering
all the DLL's as explained on my website [Movie Maker -> Trouble Shooting ->
Bad Installation] section.

You can try.
I have never tried it on a system with SP2 preinstalled but you can download
and install SP2 manually from this link:

This is a widespead problem judging by posts in a number of sites and seems
to remain unresolved. I have a) Reinstalled Windows XP Prof SP2. b) Ensured
that I have the latest version of DirectX loaded. c) Registred the relevant
dll files. d) Checked that they are registered. Like the many others, they
were there. The are not now! Is there any real smartlie out there who
really has a solution?
