Hi,

I am running Vista Home Premium and Office Professional 2007. Over the past
2-3 days, I have not been able to open any Word or Excel files that I receive
as attachment to my emails (in Outlook 2007). I have to save the files to a
location and then open them from the application - double clicking on the
file also does not work.

I am able to open .jpg files.

I have not made any changes to my computer - the only relevant info that I
can remember was that there was an update to Office (Service Pack 1) that
was installed a at around that time.

I also use another program called GoldMine and I am facing the same problem
there - when I click on the attachment, getting a message : Cannot
Run C:......xls or .doc ShellExec Error:2

Would be very grateful for any suggestions or help on how to rectify this.

I do not have Google Desktop Search installed on my computer.

Thank you
MJ

Well, if you can't double click on the file outside of Outlook, it isn't
an Outlook issue. If you go into Word and try to open the file from within
Word, does it open?

Yes I can open the files once I have saved them in a seperate location - then
I can start the application (Word or Excel) and use File ->Open to open the
file. Even after saving, I am not able to open by double clicking..

So yes, it may not be an outlook issue...

Right click on the file that you've saved to the desktop (or wherever) and
look at the properties. Verify that the file type is still set to be opened
by Word (or Excel, as the case may be).

That's an understatement.

I'm having the same issue...however only with word (excel is working fine).
I've re-installed the office suite and the problem continues. The Properties
are set correctly...and when I do attempt to open the word attachment from
email word opens however the document is never displayed...so I know that the
correct application is being used to open the documents.

Any other suggestions?

Well, if you save the file to the desktop, what happens if you double click
the file? Is it blank that way too?

I can save the doc...or attempt to open any other already saved Word doc and
it opens blank as well. The ONLY way I can view the word docs now is to open
the word application first...then use the menu option to open and browse to a
doc that has been saved.

Well, then, it doesn't sound like an Outlook issue. Sounds like you may
want to post to microsoft.public.word.general instead.

Thank you...the command ran successfully however did not correct the problem.
Any other suggestions???

Hi, I am having the exact problem; I have to save the word or excel attachment and then open word or excel before I can open the attachment; whereas before I could open the attachment simply by clicking on it in the email. Did you ever resolve the problem? If so, I would appreciate any help on what I can do.

Thank you!

Hi, Unfortunately no..I never did get this resolved and haven't had any other
suggestions either. Sorry.

What happens when you try to open the attachment out of Outlook?
What version of Outlook are you running?
Have you tried posting to a word or excel newsgroup, assuming that double
clicking on the file on the desktop opens blank as well?

You probably haven't gotten any other suggestions because you posted that
it didn't work and then, a minute later, posted 'sorry..please ignore the
last update..I posted it to the wrong place'. So, I ignored your post and
assumed you'd be posting something else. I suggested you post to microsoft.public.word.general,
since you said that if you double click on a word doc, it comes up blank
as well, is that still true?

sorry your right...I was directed to an alternate 'general Word questions'
which is where I did re-post.

It doesn't only happen from outlook attachments but no .doc will launch
without opening the word application first then going to file | open and
browsing to the document you want to view.

Were you ever to resolve this issue? If so can you explain?

Hi all,

I had the same problem of opening excel attachment in outlook. but finally i rectified the problem. Is that so simply actually... just open your excel sheet go to start file button then choose excel option---> click Advanced tab---> scroll down and go to General option and uncheck the "ignore other application that use Dynamic Data Exchange(DDE)"---> click OK
close all your running program and restart your machine... Hope it will work also in your PC
