After installing IE6, I am unable to open web pages on the
first attempt, comes up as unable to detect network
settings.
When the location bar is refreshed the site opens, and
then any subsequent site opens.
After closing down IE and restarting the same problem
occurs.
Is anyone else experiencing the same problem.
Thanks in advance for your help

Hello Craig,

In Internet Explorer, choose Tools then Internet Options.
Click on the Connections tab and choose one of the following:

1) If you are using a dialup connection
a) Highlight the connection under "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network
Settings" and click on the Settings button just to the right of the box.
b) Uncheck "Automatically Detect Settings"
2) If you are using a broadband connections such as DSL or cable modem
a) Click on the "LAN Settings" button
b) Uncheck "Automatically Detect Settings"

OK all the way out of the Internet Options menu and test Internet Explorer.

Please post back to the newsgroup if this does not resolve your issue.

Mike,
I have already done the checks that you have mentioned and
the problem still persists. Happening to all users that
have been upgraded to IE6. Not sure if there is a hot fix
for this problem, haven't been able to find one.
Any ideas.
Thanks,
Craig.

Hello Craig,

Please describe to me the physical layout of your network and how your
machines connect to the Internet (directly, via a Proxy server, via
Internet Connection Sharing).

Mike,
Machines are on a LAN and connect via a Proxy Server.
All machines running IE5 are fine except those that have
been upgraded to IE6. Settings are exactly the same for
both versions.
Thanks,
Craig.

Hello Craig,

From your first post, it appears that the machines in question are
attempting to automatically detect settings.

"unable to detect network settings"

Please send me a screenshot of the error message you are receiving (remove
the "online. " from my e-mail address).
Also send me screenshots of an IPCONFIG /ALL or WINIPCFG (choose More Info)
depending upon the operating
system the client machine is running.

Since this occurred as a result of upgrading to IE 6, what happens if your
revert back to the previous version of IE?

Also include the physical layout of the network.
