unable to open the WAVE Player

I have a gateway desktop running windows XP. I suddenly have no audio. I ran
the Pc dr. and did the audio test and the MIDI and Internet speaker test
produced sound. When I do the WAV test I get the message "unable to open the
WAVE Player". Under "sound" in device manager I have listed creative SB
audigy, unimodem half-Duplex audio device, audio codecs, legacy audio
drivers, media control devices. All say they are properly working. Any
suggestions??

What program did you used to use to play .wav files?

Right-click on any .wav files and select Open With.

What are your choices of programs? What happens when you select each of
them?

You said this problem started suddenly. When exactly did it start? What
did you do (e.g., install a new program or update or run some sort of
scan) right before the problem started?
 
File types-open with windows media player. When I try to play a wav files in
WMP i get this message " Windows Media Player cannot play the file because
there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device
installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it
might not be functioning properly." I tryed to do a system restore but my
computer will not restore to an earlier date.
 
OK, stupid move on my part. When i tried to find help about system restore
not working, someone suggested deleting all restore points and setting a new
one, which i did.
 
We all make mistakes. Just don't make that particular mistake again. :-)

Chances are you have some program interfering with System Restore. See:

If you have the dreaded Norton, see:

Once you address your System Restore issue, unfortunately you still
won't be able to use it to go back to the point before you had this
particular issue since you deleted that Restore Point. At least, you
will be able to use it in the future.

Open Control Panel, then Sounds and Audio Devices. Report back the
settings you see under each tab. Pay special attention to:

Audio tab | Sound Playback | Default Device | Volume

In Windows Media Player, select:

Tools | Options | File Types

Is "wav" checked?
 
Modem under volume-no audio device
sounds-windows default
audio-default device-modem #1 line playback
sound recording- default device-Modem #1 Line Record
MIDI music playback-default device-SB Audigy Synth A (D880)
Use only default devices is checked
voice playback -default device -modem #1 line playback
voice recording-default device-modem #1 line record

in WMP-Wav is checked

Since you didn't answer these questions, I will re-ask:

You said this problem started suddenly. When exactly did it start? What
did you do (e.g., install a new program or update or run some sort of
scan) right before the problem started?

(The answers to the above questions could help provide important clues.)

Perhaps all you need to do is (re-)install the driver for your audio
card.

More info will help:

1. Model and model number of your Gateway desktop.

2. Do you have onboard sound or a separate sound card? Which is selected
in BIOS?

3. In another post, you mentioned "creative SB audigy." Model number
will help.

4. XP Home or XP Pro? Which Service Pack level?

5. To clarify, in Sounds and Audio Device Properties, Audio tab, what is
the default device under Sound playback? "Modem #1 line playback?" In
the drop-down menu, do you have any other choices? Your sound card needs
to appear there!
 
After investigating a little, i found out my son ran pcpitstop on my computer
a few days age. One of the things they suggested was to update the audio
driver which he did. I just tried to "roll back" the driver and it says
there are no drivers saved. I tried again to update the driver and it says i
have the latest driver. My computer is a gateway yorktown 4000806. I'm
using windows xp home SP3. Don't know how to check the bios. Can't find
model number of sb audigy. under the audio tab, there are no other choices on
the drop down menu.
