Recently I sought advice from Microsoft on a technical issue that calls for me to edit the registry but everytime I try to open it, it flashes on the screen then disappears. I have tried every way I know to open it but with no luck.

I've tried all of that, I get the same thing every time. It flashes on the screen for just a second then its gone.

You could be infected with one of these worms:

Ok, you're the one I need help from. I have been consulting with Earthlink, Microsoft, etc...over the last few days. The reason they were having me edit the registry in the first place is because I can't get task manager up either. At that time I didn't know that I could not open the registry. One week ago with the help of Earthlink and Symantec we removed the W32BlasterWorm from my system. So.....what do I do now? Please.

Try that program as you don't know which worm is infecting your system. I would strongly recommend you download and install the
latest definitions update for Norton AV and run that afterwards to clean up.

Mr. Beaudette, thank you so much for your advice. You were right. I had 2 files (SVCHOST.EXE & DLLHOST.EXE) both infected with the W32.Nachi worm, and I had a winsock file infected with the Exploit DCom RPC.gen virus. My system has been checked and rechecked and is finally clean. I really appreciate your help.
