My laptop recently broke, the repair shop gave me my hard-drive in a USB
convertor and said that I could access all my old files through this external
hard drive.

When I got home I tried entering these folders on another computer! I
managed to open all the folders except my profile folders! eg. where I save
all my documents to once I have logged on to winXP.

I guess this is because the folder can only be unlocked at Windows XP login
and when I select my old profile, however because I'm using another computer
my profile doen't come up as an option at windows login!

Can anyone help me access my profiles files from another computer?

The reason is that although the usernames might be the same, the SIDs are
different.

You need to:

Log-on as an Administrative user. (your account will do if it's in the Admin
group)

Take possession(ownership) of the folder and its files/subfolders.

Reboot the computer.

Now go to the folder, and you should be able to add permissions for the user
of this computer. (or just 'everyone')

If you hadn't encrypted the data files (and marking a folder
private is something completely different from encryption), you may be
facing nothing more than a simple permissions issue. Have you tried
taking ownership of the old folders?
