unable to open file directly from CD-RW

When I backup my Quicken file to a CD-RW, the file
appears to copy correctly. But, I am unable to open and
view the file directly from the CD-RW. Shouldn't I be
able to do this? I can open and read a Word document
directly from the CD, but not a Quicken file. I try to
change the file attribute to no say read-only, but it
doesn't seem to work. What should I do?

Quicken is probably trying to make some changes to the data file when
it is opened, such as an audit trail entry recording the fact that the
file was opened.

Because the Quicken program does not directly support CDRW drives
(most programs don't) it cannot write the updated file back to the
CDRW drive and therefore the program does not start up properly.

All files on a CD have the "read only" attribute set and this cannot
be changed.

Just to illustrate this, open a word document from a CDRW and make a
change to it. Then try saving the file back to the CDRW.

Your only solution is to copy the Quicken file(s) to the hard drive,
use them from there, then use the CDRW software to copy the updated
files back to the CDRW.

To be able to read the file you must "Restore Backup File" from the File
menu of Quicken. Simply trying to open the file with Quicken won't work.
Of course, if the files that you have restored from are bad you may trash
your good data files.

To test the Quicken backup, I would copy the entire Quicken folder to
another location on the hard drive. Perform your backup then attempt a
restore. If all works OK you can delete the copied files elsewhere on the
hard drive. If not, copy the files back from the other location and you
should be OK to go. This is the procedure I used when I first tested
Quicken Backup feature when I started to backup to my server's hard drive
from the local hard drive.
