unable to open default email????

After a clean install of office xp on a compaq v5000 I got the following
error message. "Unable to open your default email folder. could not open
the item. try again." I installed sp3 for office but this had no impact on
the blasted thing.

Outlook express is working just fine.

Not that it should make any difference but the laptop came preinstalled with
a trial version of the new office which I deleated. it also has works
installed.

Create a new mail profile and point it at the proper PST.
Outlook express is working just fine.

This has nothing to do with anything.
 
I have this same problem.....the error does not give you a chance to point it
to a PST. After the "Unable to open" you get "Would you like to open your
default File Sys instead" Whether you answer Yes or No you get an VB Runtime
Error, and whether you try Abort, Retry, or Ignore it closes.

Who can I get to a point where I can point Outlook to my PST, or create a
new account?
 
You don't create a new account, you create a new mail profile here:

Control Panel->Mail Icon->Profiles->New. Do not copy your old profile.
Create a new one and configure it to use your current .pst file.

Try Detect and Repair. Then right click on the Outlook Desktop Icon and use
that to set up a new mail profile.
