have one pc on network that will not obtaion ip address
from router. windows is assigning ip address to card and
will not release or renew. i can put in static ip address
in the same span and can ping others on the network but the
machine will not retrieve one. had the same problem at
another account and formatted machine reloaded 2000 and
corrected problem.surely there is another option.customer
said uninstalled program (grokster) music download program.
machine asked to reboot and pc stopped getting ip address
after that.any help would be appreciated.

I have the same problem. My W2K machine has been acting
funny after installing and uninstalling Grokster. My
assigned IP address is 169.254.45.x when it should be
assigned an address of 198.168.x.x I'm curious to find
out what the problem may be???? Another syptom I noticed
was that I couldn't run Adobe Reader.

I finally resorted to replacing the cable and the network
card along with new drivers. It appears to have fixed it.

look in the properties box of the card itself from the netword properties
page. somewere there is a part were you can set the link speed and such. in
that area there will be a media adress and media access address, find the
apropriate mac adress for your card and fill it in. is it is onboard look to
a 12 digit number around the printer port, if it is an addon card, it might
be labled there somewhere.

alot of the newer cards are using a software mac address instead of buring
it onto the chip like normal. some dhcp servers (like the cable conections)
will need the mac adress to create an ip acount and asign an ip adress to
the client machine.
