I wanted to decrease memory down to a reasonabel 5% and exclude external disk
from restore monitoring. I could not, marking checks has been disabled by
Group Policy. Now, my PC is stand alone and I have administrator privileges.
It is true however that I have a LAN installed since I have at home three
access points in fiber optics (Relatk Fast Ethernet). I could not find any
place where modify this Group Policy which I do not recall to have installed.
Perhaps some Key in the Registry or create a new account?
May somebody help me?
Thanks

Go to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm and click "S". Then
scroll down near the bottom to "System Restore". There are a few
helpful links listed there.

Is this XP Home or XP Pro? For XP Pro start the Group Policy snap-in by
entering gpedit.msc in the Start menu run box. The policy is at:

Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Administrative
Templates\System\System Restore

For XP Home delete the DisableConfig value at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT

"DisableSR" is another value which can also be found there at times,
this value disables System Restore altogether, it too can be deleted if
found there.

How to Disable the System Restore Configuration User Interface

These changes are often caused by malware infections, do complete
malware/spyware/virus scans on your machine.

Thanks to both of you!
Will try what you suggested and let you know. First a complete check with
Norton
Greetings

Great John John, I did it and worked it out. The area is accessible, no more
grayed.
My machie is XP Home
I delete the value as you suggested but perhaps would have been better to
put 1 instead of 0 in the value?

Anywow really a good job, thanks for the help to both, I also learned good
links to explore.

Greetings from Italy!

You're welcome. Deleting the value is a perfectly fine way of dealing
with the problem.

It is good that it is working again.

If you did not add those values to your registry manually or with
Group Policy Editor (impossible with XP Home), something did it for
you.

Malicious software will attack things that can be used to undo it, and
System Restore is a very popular target.

It is well known that sometimes Norton and System Restore do not get
along - but you will not find that out until you actually try to use
one of your Restore Points and it doesn't work.

It is so popular that Symantec even wrote a document about what to so
when SR behaves in a certain way with Norton installed:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/pfdocs/2005113009323013

Consider some additional scans if Norton did not report anything. No
single scanning program knows about everything.

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if desired.
