unable to map a drive

I am having a problem mapping 1 drive on a PC running Windows XP Pro from a
laptop running Windows Vista Business. I am able to map the 3 hard drives
in the machine with no problem, but when I try to map the external USB drive
I get the following error:

The standard you don't have permissions messages, and then it says " Not
enough server storage is available to process the command".

I tried unmapping all the other drives and mapping the external once first,
but received the same message.

On MS knowledge base it says I need to change (or add) to the IRPStackSize
in the registry. I have mapped allot of drive and have never had to do
this, but then this is only the 2nd Vista system ( other than my own) which
I have worked with and I had no problems on my machine (Vista Ultimate)
mapping 5 drives on two other machines.

Is this a logical step to archive the needed results? I don't have a
problem editing the registry, I've done it before, I just wanted to see if
there was something else I could do first.

Chip,

Is the shared drive on the XP computer? That's where you have to update the
registry. Not the Vista client.

Thanks Chuck. Yes the drive I am trying to connect to is on the XP machine.
Good thing I asked before proceeding. And thanks for that link. I had it
at one time and then lost it!
 
I did what it said adding the registry entry as it wasn't there. I set the
value to 15, but it still didn't work. Does one just keep experimenting
until it works, the MS site said it can be between 11 & 50, but since it was
just one drive I could not map do I'd use a low number. Guess that didn't
work. Any harm in using a larger number? (use too many system resources)?

Keep increasing it, Chip. Some people have gone as high as 48. We are told to
start small and work upwards, I don't know what happens if you start with 48.

This one is what some people call a "magic wand". You wave it, while incanting
"15 18 21 24 ...". You can try "48 48 48" if you like.
