For some reason, my computer has stopped allowing multiple users to log into
Windows at the same time. There are 4 accounts on the computer and it does
not matter which user is the first logged or and which user is the second
trying to log in.

What happens if you try to lock the machine, Windows key + L?

Check out this page:

Have you made any changes recently? Eg joined a domain, enabled offline
files? Both of these disable fast user switching.

You're a little light on detail here; check the link below for some
advice:

When I "switch user" and attempt to log in a second user, I get a brief (1
second) look at the background of the user that is already logged in and then
the computer kicks me back to the log in screen. I am running Windows XP
Home Edition, SP 3.0.

I have not made any changes to the computer recently or tried to enable
off-line printing or anything like that. I have McAfee loaded on my computer
but that has been there for quite a while prior to when this started
happening.

I have tried turning fast switching off and back on to see if that was the
problem. I have also tried restoring my computer to a point prior to when
we first noticed the problem occuring. Neither of these things affected the
problem. I tried the suggestion of using Windows+L to lock the computer and
then unlocked it, but there was no change.

I appreciate your help. Thank you.

Try logging in as another user then have a squint at your system logs:

Start > Run > type "eventvwr.msc" > [Enter]

for any entries from the exact time you tried, there might be a clue there.

Also, try running the file checker:

Start > Run > "cmd" > [Enter]

In the Command Prompt box type

sfc /scannow

and press Enter, let it run, see if that helps matters.

I suppose there could well be malware that breaks fast user switching - what
are your protection measures on that score and security in general?
