I have Windows XP Home Edition on and e-machines t-2885. I just purchsed a
Seagate Freedesk 500gb external hardrive. The driver and other software are
pre-installed on the drive. When I connect the drive it is initially
recognized. The the New Hardware wizard opens. I select to have the
software installed automatically. The wizard then searches for the software.
The it says please wait while the wizard intalls the software. Then I get
the following error: Cannot install this hardware. There was a problem
installing this hardware FreeAgent. An error occurred during the
installation of the device. The data is invalid. I have reviewed the
knowledge base and found KB810882. The issue is all I have are restore CDs
and cannot access the driver.cab file as instructed. I am also having the
exact same issue when trying to connect my new cell phone Samsung t 819 to
transfer data.

I have been unable to find any alternative to obtain a copy of the
driver.cab file and seagate does not provide a copy of the driver online as
it is preinstalled on the drive. Help?

The USB drivers are supposed to be built-in to XP. There are no
drivers provided by any hard drive / flash drive manufacturers for
XP. This will indicate that might have a problem with your XP. You
will need to check the system with sfc /scannow (???)

you can use sfc, after chkdsk and possibly defrag,
if you know how to use it, but this is more complicated.

I ran chkdsk and sfc /scannow and still have the same problem. I also copied
and replaced the driver.cab file with a file copied from another PC same
model also SP2 any other ideas before I have to do a restore ans lose
everything?

Your not alone with this problem. It is with every USB device with drivers.
Sounds to me that MS did something in one of their updates. Maybe even did it

I just had that problem with a 4 slot internal USB card installed. It
errored out on "driver" that was on the install disk. What I did was
1. un-installed the driver software
2. removed the card
3. re-booted PC
4. re-installed the card
5. re-booted
..
Wa' La ,,,,, winXP found the hardware and the card works fine.

Anyone need an extra slightly used 1.44 floppy (grin)
