When attempting to install Windows Defender using Windows XP Professional,
the following occurs:

Windows Installer

! This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package
exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to
verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.

The installer database is suposed to contain the logic and data required to
install Windows Defender. The digital signature details show that the
certificate is only valid to Thursday, October 04, 2007 3:53:46 PM. Where do
I find a package with a valid Digital Signature?

Hello cachetray,

Install Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435) is availªble here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803

Locate your file msi.dll (with search if you are
not sure where it's located) and confirm what the version is, either from
it's properties or just passing your cursor over it. If it's not the
latest which is 3.1.4000.2435, then:

You are correct about the certificate used to sign the download, but I've
just tested this with a fresh download and it had no effect at all on being
able to install the file in my test--i.e. it installed normally.

I would recommend re-doing the download. Get it from
Microsoft--www.microsoft.com/defender will get you there quickly.

Save the downloaded file to a convenient location--the desktop is fine.

Temporarily disable any real-time antivirus or other antimalware scanners
active on your system.

Double-click the downloaded file to install.

Now--take notes--and let us know at what stage this fails.

(and don't forget to enable the antivirus again!)

Thanks for the instructions Bill.. I do know how to download and install
software which is not the problem.
When right clicking on the .msi package the options to run as and to open
are missing. The options available are install, uninstall, open with, and
repair. The package is obviously lacking some data.
Thanks Bill..
