Hi,
Can anyone help me. I formatted my 25 gb hard-drive after major problems
with a winxp repair and used my cd to re-install the o.s..It boots ok, loads
the files but hangs when it gets to the start windows screen. I've removed
all the peripherals and have formatted a few times but still no joy.
Should I have a floppy boot disk like someone told me? If so, what files
should be on it?
I don't really know what to do next and am rather frustrated, it's been a
long trying day!

XP boots from the CD. A floppy won't really boot to XP.
How did you originally install/upgrade to XP? What type of
XP CD do you have, retail full, retail upgrade, Microsoft
OEM, OEM-OEM, a restore disk, what?

For some reason the system screwed up and I couldn't use the cd to re-load
windows so I used a boot disk to format c:\ drive. Is that wrong and can I
remedy it at all?
Sorry I didn't reply straight away,had a pressing engagement.

Jim,

Initially I used the full retail Professional.XP as an upgrade over Win.98
but have had to re-load WinXP since then.

I have retail full version of Win XP Professional which I have tried to
load. Also I have a full Home version on my laptop which I tried to install,
just on the off-chance it might work. (formatting in-between each time)I've
lost my old Win.98 cd.

As the cd didn't work,I formatted the C:\ drive using a boot disk I had
downloaded from the web.I also made 6 XP boot disks in case of problems and
they too load the drivers and get to the "starting windows" screen and it
freezes up again.

I have another hard drive installed which I use as a back-up. I have turned
this off in the Bios, should I disconnect it also?

Boot from the XP full retail CD, you may need to open the
BIOS and set the CD to be the first boot device, then when
you boot you will be offered the choices of what you want to
do.

Select INSTALL and the CD has all the tools to do a wipe of
the current disk, repartition and do a full install.

Jim,
Thanks for replying.
Have tried to boot from the full retail cd but it stops at the "start
windows" screen.........Update. Disk has at last JUST loaded for the first
time in 2 days!!!!!!
Hopefully I can go through with the install. No idea why it should suddenly
load cd fully but thankfully all will be ok.

Thanks again
