'm currently (and have been for a long time) unable to install any dsoftware
onto my pc.

I'm running XP Pro.

It seems to be only *some* programs that I'm having problems installing, and
they usually just hang after getting about 70% completed.

Some examples are:

Drivers for my HP Printer
dotnetfx.exe (MS .NET Framework)

There are many many others tht I can't remember right now.

I've scanned for viruses with Norton, used Adaware and Spybot S&D, none of
which find anything.

Any ideas?

Try installing the software from the Safe Mode.

I too am having this problem. I can't install anything from Microsoft. It's
like I have update constipation! I just tried to install the "installer" and
it's like a cruel joke... just hanging there creating a bogus "restore
point". I've been rebuilding up from a hard drive/system board problem with a
Dell Lattitude D600. Other than this installation problem, the computer works
great.

Some general information. My system is Windows XP with an upgraded Service
Pack 2, with 2GB of memory. I've been able to install Adobe products, but
it's an ordeal, with long hangs half way through of up to a half hour, then
wham, the application is suddenly installed. I have never seen anything like
this, and there's absolutely NOTHING in the "idiobase" on Microsoft. I am
going into Dell with my Gold Support and see if they have any solutions--if I
succeed, I'll return and post a fix!!

Reporting back... I was able to install my Windows update backlog, but cannot
install my Adobe Illustrator CS2... I can install my old Illustrator 10, but
the CS2 Illustrator install hangs forever, and then quits. I was able to
install Photoshop CS2, and Acrobat 7.0 Pro--prior to the Windows intaller
update, but they both had long hang times (like punt) but did install.

I installed the latest Windows Installer, and that fixed the Windows update
problem, but I'm still stuck on Illustrator. Will report back after checking
in with Adobe on Monday...

Hypothesis... this has something to do with users who install all at once to
Windows XP Pro SP 1, then move on in the same session to upgrade to the
Service Pack 2. I have a two year old Dell Lattitude and successfully updated
last year to SP2, but I am now rebuilding the Windows OS due to a sys
board/hard drive problem, and began encountering these installation issues...
I think there's some sort of hidden receipe issue about what you install and
in what order when building up the XP Pro installation...
