Hi,

We have a Windows 2000 AD SP4. There's only 1 server. Whenever we want to
install a new software in the AD server, we get some errors, all of them says
it can't create the program group for the software we want to install.
Someones says an error like "Programs", and stops installing (well, it
doesn't install anything, nor asks anything, only start installation and
stops with that error), others asks for the program group name we want to
give it, at warns about the impossibility to create it, and stops.

I've tried to go to C:\Documents and Settings, and check I have access to
any folder, and can create folders. Everything is ok.

But when I click with the righ mouse button on Start menu, I can't see the
options "Explore All users", nor "Open All Users".

I've reapply SP4, but nothing.

Does anybody know what the problem is?

Thanks a lot.

Alex.

Just because you can create a folder or file in the root folder doesn't
mean there isn't something wrong with permissions in a child folder or a
registry key. Download regmon and filemon from www.sysinternals.com.
Start them, install the program, when it errors stop them both. Save the
logs to a text file open them in notepad and seach the regmon log for
"ACCDENIED" and search the filemon log for "FAILURE". Wherever you see
this in either log is where your permissions issues are. If it's a
registry issue just use Regedt32 to modify the key. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I'm sorry to say there's no ACCDENIED nor FAILURE on regmon and Filemon logs.

It's quite difficult for me, as we need to install this software to control
people access to the company. Well, it happens with other software. I know is
not a problem of the admin account, because on another server we have, we are
able to install it with the same admin account. I think it has relation with
the server itself, but unable to know.

Any other ideas?

Thanks a lot.

Alex.
