Hi all. I am having trouble installing Win Defender. Recently I uninstalled
win defender because I found TWO entries of it in Add Remove program (I have
no idea from where or how I got 2 entries). I am using a laptop; winXP SP2;
one user and one admin as login. Both entries uninstalled without a hitch.
Downloaded the latest from site and installed. The message was "Older version
could not be removed. contact support group". I thought left over from
uninstallation might be the cause. So I tried removing every trace of
defender from hard drive including registry (manually). This time no better.
Then I remembered to login as admin and repeat what I did earlier. No better
again. Any help?
I am not sure of which version of defender i was using. All I know is it was
up-to-date and working fine. The only reason I uninstalled defender is double
entry in Add Remove. I am trying to install the latest defender available on
microsoft site.
If the above description is not clear or sufficient, I would be happy to
provide more info if asked. Please help. Thanks in advance.

Hello Dillydally,

Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
dministratºr.
This is the key!
The installation as an admin is not enough.
You needed to login as an Adm!n!stratºr.

I suppose you could also try System Restore using a checkpoint from before
the uninstall was done.

Reboot

Now, EXIT WD program.
Go back to Add/Remove programs and uninstall WD.

Reboot again.

Remove all temporarily junk with CCleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/
UNCHECK Yahoos toolbar during install.
UNCHECK in Options, Advanced, Only delete files in Windows folders older than 48 hours.
UNCHECK Windows Defender in the applications.

Run the above remover in safe mode on all 3 settings(windows, apps &
issues) and clear anything found reboot and see if it still exists. Run
twice CCleaner

Run this

Look for the broom Clean up, also Tune Up..

Install Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435) is availªble here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803

Locate your file msi.dll (with search if you are
not sure where it's located) and confirm what the version is, either from
it's properties or just passing your cursor over it. If it's not the
latest which is 3.1.4000.2435, then:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803/

I'd recommend re-downloading WD, and saving to a known location--like the
desktop.
After the download is complete, disable real-time protection by your
antivirus for long enough to do the installation. please disable or turn off
as much other software that always runs as you can--real time antivirus
scanning, any other antispyware software, (Stop all programs that are open in
the bottom taskbar) etc.

I hope this post is helpful, let us know how it works ºut.

Thanks a ton Engel! It indeed works. I am now up and running with WD. But I
still wonder if the 1st step of "restoring to a checkpoint before uninstall"
was necessary. Sorry if I am mistaken. A few words to Microsoft - can you
people please make the installation plain and straight forward!!
Thanks again for everything.

Hi Dillydally,

<< I am not sure of which version of defender i was using.>>

Trying the SR can bring the program back and be able to see the version., if
you have 1592 you have to unistall before you apply 1593. But if the version
was before 1592, you can install 1593 on top of the old.

Beªr in mind there is no "single" solution that fits everybody's prºblems.

Glad to help and thanx for updating the thread.
