I am using IE5.5 with no problems except that certain sites insist that I
use IE6. I have downloaded ie6setup but when I try to install it gets to
about 98% complete then says that not all components have been installed and
asks me to quit the installation or press help. Pressing help states I have
all the req'd downloads but it will still not install. The full message on
the help screen states as follows:-
It appears you have the correct setup files, but the installation failed.
Try closing down all other programs and try running Setup again. If that
still does not work, contact Microsoft Product Support Services for
additional help.

I have closed all programs and still the problem occurs and the Microsoft
Product Support Services does not describe my problem but refers me to this
newsgroup
Any suggestions please

Thanks
I have tried a few of the suggestions with no success. This includes
stopping all programs including antivirus and then deleting various
components of IE5.5 with no sucess. The next steps involve renaming various
DLL and various changes to the registry which may be beyond the scope of my
abilities. I may have to settle for IE 5.5 unless there is an easier method
to upgrade to IE6

There are several WinMe experts in this newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windowsme.internet

Try this

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

Reinstall IE6SP1.

You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.

Good luck,

Zee

Thanks Frank I will try to have a look at that newsgroup. I just have to
reset my computer back to how it was. I tried to re-format and reload all
programs but that was no help. I will try that newsgroup. Thanks

Brilliant...that has worked a treat...that was a very elegant
solution...thanks very much oops...now all I have to do is to get a version
of messenger that works with ME. The latest version on the MS site works
with XP. Thanks for the advice...it ended a day of frustration

Clive,

Glad it worked for you too!

That solution... in Sandi's site I've advised, clive :
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/3.html
Here: "The following may assist when an install does not complete
successfully (click here)": http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/install.txt
Go to My Computer, View, Folder Options (or Control Panel, folder options
depending on your operating system. Turn on the option to "show hidden
files and folders".
Create a temp folder named "Old_IE_uninstall".
Go to folder C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information.
Go to Edit, Select All, Cut all files.
Open "Old_IE_uninstall" folder and paste the files just cut.
Try the IE install again.
If the install works for you now, you can rename the "Old_IE6_Uninstall"
folder, and then delete if things continue to work properly.

FYI, I designed this workaround long before Sandi posted it.

But that is a different debate...

Cheers,

Zee

Curious...

Why do you believe the OP reinstalled WinME?

FYI, this was a quite common problem when upgrading to IE6.0SP1 when running
WinME.

Zee

Thanks to both of you ...it was on Sandi's site but was contained along with
a lot of other information...I think I looked at the bit that said...Setup
Was Unable to Install All the Components...and the solution was a little
further down the info on Sandi's site...Setup was unable to install all the
components. Please close all applications and try running Setup again and
referred to me the following site.
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q202/2/46.asp
Anyway the method works and that is all I know...Thanks again

But that doesn't apply in this case, he was only trying to upgrade from
IE5.5 to IE6:

"I am using IE5.5 with no problems except that certain sites insist that I
use IE6."

And, again, it is a known issue in WinME.

Zee

yeps opps is correct I was just trying to upgrade from IE5 to IE6.

OK, I /suspect/ that's what OP did but didn't tell us...and he's not
posted anything to say my suspicions aren't valid.

(Joining conversation in the middle!)

Try installing it in safe mode.

boot Me into safe mode, run the IE6 installer.

here, at work, we have to boot 9x based systems to completely install IE6 :)

I prefer Firefox anyway.. if a site demands IE (a specific IE version
at that...), i will depart and never return to that site.
