Subject says it all. No matter what I do, I cannot get the import function in
Windows Mail to see my OE 6 messages for import. Does it not recognize .DBX
files?

Into what mail program are you having this problem? Are you asking about
Windows Mail Desktop-Beta in XP, or Windows Mail in Vista? How are you
attempting the import? Specific steps you are using and where they seem to
fail would be helpful.

I'm attempting to import messagef from OE6 into Vista Mail (hence the chosen
forum for my message), I am using the Import command in Mail and asking it
to import the .DBX ffiles rom my Identity in WinXP. THis is the standard
method for importing message for OE 6, so why won't Mail recognize these
folder files?

Try choosing the option on the bottom instead of an identity and browse to
where the DBX files are.

Tha is the option I'm using. The identity option is grayed out. When I browse
to the store folder, nothing shows up. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Are you dual booting on the computer? Or did you just copy the message
store folder from another computer to this one? If so, and you used a CD to
transfer the DBX files, you will have to copy them from CD to a folder on
your existing hard drive, then select all of the DBX files in the folder and
clear the Read-Only attribute that was set when you copied them to a CD.

And while this may be the "appropriate forum" for your question, there have
been many postings from others who are also using Windows Mail, and Windows
Mail Desktop Beta (which is a separate program), and we have posting from
people asking about Windows Live Mail. So please don't fly off on a high
horse when basic questions about operating sytem, and version of Mail
program are asked. They are asked only so that we can better help you.

Hi Jim I tried this method too.......where do u copy the files DBX's to? Can
u provide the path & dir I copy them to in Vista . All other methods of
trying to import in winmail in vista have failed. I am familar with the
import features in xp pro & have used it many times before .Using it in
Vista winmail I have not had any luck

I just create a folder in Vista called Mail. Copy all the mail folder DBX
files along with the master index, folders.dbx and make sure they are not
marked as Read-Only. Then open Windows Mail and use its
File/Import/Messages and select From a Message Store and point to the folder
containing the DBX files and not to the DBX files themselves.

If for some reason that fails, you can simply open Outlook Express and
drag/drop all the messages you are trying to save to a folder you create.
Then copy that folder (which will contain only EML files) to the Vista
machine and drag/drop them from the folder into a local mail folder you
create for the purpose. That's probably the easiest way to do it.

In either case, newsgroup messages will not import at all.

this solution worked a treat, thanks. :)

i can only guess most people when selecting the directory of their backed up
emails, go into the directory containing the files instead of selecting the
root directory.
