I have used Outlook 2000, recently updated to Outlook 2002
or XP as it is also named. The installation completes
successfully. But when the new Outlook starts , it begins
to import account settings . After a while a dialog box
appears, which only contains the message ' Task failed'
(its a Swedish version, so I have made a translation from
the swedish statement 'Åtgärd misslyckades'). The dump
which is generated points to
AppName: outlook.exe AppVer: 10.0.2627.1 ModName:
outex.dll
ModVer: 10.0.2625.0 Offset: 0001ad76

Any help appreciated .
/Håkan

You probably want to start with Option 3;

1) try running scanpst.exe on your Personal Folder

2) try renaming outcmd.dat to .old and restart Outlook. All the Toolbars
will reset then. This is quite a common problem with Outlook . The default
location for this file is:
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook

3) try recreating the profile in Control Panel-> Mail-> button Show Profiles

4) try running Outlook with the /safe switch from your Start-> Run window.
When this works run Help-> Detect and Repair

5) try disabling individual add-ons in Tools-> Options-> tab Other-> button
Advanced E-mail Options...

Thanks for your input. Have tried all suggestions to no
avail.
I also completely uninstalled and installed Outlook 2002
again.
I then set up a new profile without any accounts.
Then I got as far as the wizard. After completing it, the
'Configuring Outlook' appears again, and it tries to import
accounts (from where ?) . And it fails again with the same
message as before . I have moved the Outlook.pst file to
another location, so it should not try to use the old file
from the previous installation.
How can I disable the 'Configuration' ? Is this a part of
the installation ? This should be a simple update - but I
am sure I am missing something - any suggestions ? Are
there any log files of the install process , where useful
info can be found ?

Don't choose for the import; it will try to import mail and mailsettings
from other mailprograms like Outlook Express. Also; after you finished
installing Office/Outlook don't start Outlook but install Service Pack 2
first. Once installed restart and delete your mailprofile (not just the
accounts in the profile) from Control Panel-> Mail-> button Show Profiles...

Have tried all of the options to no avail.
Also tried to completely de-install and install
Outlook 2002 again. Still the 'configuring Outlook'
appears , and then 'Task failed', when it tries to 'move
accounts' (from where ?) . Switched to a completely new
profile, and moved the Outlook.pst file to another
location. Still ,the error persists .How can I enable
full logging , so that information on the source of the
error can be found ?

I want to transfer the settings in my mailprofile (and all
the old e-mails ) into Outlook 2002.
Is it not possible to import it after I have upgraded to
Service Pack 2 ?
/Håkan

Can you please answer ? The service pack update does not
work either . It only says that it can not find any Office
XP on my PC . Is there no way to import settings and old
e-mails from Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2002 ? In this case it
simply is not possible to upgrade the product. I can not
bypass the step where it wants to 'move account setting' ,
no matter what I do. Are there no tracing possibilities ?
The message that appears give no clues as to what went
wrong.
