Whenever I click on an internet explorer launch button (desktop, start menu,
quicklaunch), instead of opening up a new window so that I can have multiple
windows, it takes the window I'm in, back to the homepage.
I've tried Ctrl + N, but it only refreshed the window I was in.
This is incredibly annoying and I've looked through options but I can't find
anything. some help would be great thanks

Try the following and see if it helps:

Open Multiple Windows In IE

To keep more than one browser window open at a time, click File in the main
menu, select New, then Window. To close a browser window, click the X in the
top right-hand corner or select Close from the File menu. You can also open
a new browser window with Ctrl+N.

Try these steps:
Open IE, tools, internet options.
Select Advanced tab and click the [restore defaults] button.
Later, select the Programs and click the [reset web settings] button.
Click OK.

You may have a program running which is blocking pop-up windows-
something like Yahoo Companion, Google toolbar, a firewall, Earthlink (or
another) pop-up blocker, etc. You'll have to uninstall the program or turn
off the feature that's blocking new windows.

With some programs of this type, using Ctrl+click or Shift+click will allow
a new window.

I am having the same problem and none of the solutions
below address the issue. This seems to have started after
I installed SP2.

A bug perhaps?

Did you try any of the suggestions that have been provided for Lulu to see
if they would help? :-)

Also, you might try starting a new thread of your own listing all the
