unable to get w2k updates

M

Michelle

I am trying to help a friend with his laptop... he has
windows 2000 professional. When i go to the windows
update page and scan for updates, i get a total of 10
updates to install. When you click on review and install
updates, the whole page closes. I am not booted offline
completely as there is still a connection, but you have
to go back and scan for updates again... with the same
result every time. Why does the page close on me without
installing updates? Could really use some help here!

Thank you

Michelle

Please check the link with all errors for Windows Updates.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
The below solution is listed under the subsection" Problem Downloading
/Installing a Software
Problem Description:
After accepting the EULA, the Windows Update - Web Page Dialog window
appears but the download never starts. Nothing "moves" on the download
progress bar, no matter how long you leave the connection open.

Resolutions:
Please re-register the following files:
regsvr32 msscript.ocx
regsvr32 dispex.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll

1. Click "Start," and then click "Run."
2. Type regsvr32 msscript.ocx in the "Open" box and click "OK."
3. Repeat for dispex.dll,vbscript.dll, and scrrun.dll.

Next, make sure file (open) type .JS is properly associated:
1. In Control Panel, click "Folder Options," and then click "File Types."
2. Locate the .JS extension and click "Advanced."
3. Make sure the "Application to perform action" field contains:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\WScript.exe "%1" %* This is for a Windows XP computer.
For Windows 2000 substitute the C:\WINDOWS\ with C:\Winnt\. For Windows 98
and Windows Millenium Edition substitute this: C:\WINDOWS\System\ for
C:\Windows\system32.

Issue Applies To:
Windows 2000
Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition
Windows Millennium Edition

Do get back to us if this worked.

Sree,

I'm having the same problem with Windows 2000 server. I have done three
fresh installs of the OS, but continue to run into this problem. Followed
steps below, and the only change was that I get an hourglass at the "Windows
is looking for updates" screen. Percent never changes. Task manager shows
that I. E. is not responding. Just for the heck of it, I also tried the
steps described in Microsoft's article Q243787 (WINUP-Err Msg: "Cannot
Display Page". No results. Also tried downloading and installing latest
version of I.E. before running update, still no help.

I do many updates, but have never encountered such a persistent problem with
this process.
