I've just purchased a new computer, due to my previous
motherboard dying. Prior to the loss of computer #1, I
had two hard drives. Both are Western Digitals. My master
hard drive was reformatted and successfully works. My 2nd
hard drive (the slave) will not read in Windows. I've
tried the jumper settings provided by WD, and the HD will
function with the master "sitting out" (meaning the
master doesn't read - but the slave shows up ok)

I've called WD and they say it doesn't seem to be a
hardware issue, but maybe the way XP is handling the
situation. Any advice/suggestions? I'd really prefer not
to have to wipe that drive out as well. Thanks.

Don't know if this helps or not.
1. Are they both showing up in the bios or Cmos setup?
If they are not showing up its a hardware problem.
2. I thing some of the WD HD have a jumper for a single -
master - slave. Make sure the 1st hard drive is set for
master and not single.

Actually, I noticed this today myself on one of my machines.

As you boot your machine, if both drives are listed, then the hardware is
hooked up OK. If not, then you are experiencing a hardware problem.

If your 2 hard drives are listed, then once you are in Windows, open the
Control Panel and select Performance and Maintenance, and then
Administrative Tools. Double click Computer Management. From the Computer
Management window, in the left pane, under Storage, click on Disk
Management. Is your drive listed in the right at all? If it is, go ahead and
re-partition/reformat it from here.

good luck!

Go back to looking at the rear of BOTH drives. Ensure one is set as master
and the other as slave. If one is set as CS (Cable Select) change it to be
either the master or the slave.

Once you're sure this is correct and it's seen as correct in the BIOS, then
restart the PC.

You should instantly see the master drive. You may not be able to see the
slave drive until you right click on My Computer and select Manage. On the
following screen, select Disk Management. Right click on the slave drive
(which should appear on the right hand side of the screen) and assign it a
drive letter.

Now they should BOTH be seen in Windows Explorer.
