Unable to Find Operating System

I have a Compaq notebook running XP Pro that's been
stable for some time... it's not set to hibernate, but it
is set to shut off the display (10 minutes), disk drive
(1/2 hour), and suspend (1 hour)...

What has been happening periodically, is that after
several hours of non-use (still plugged into AC power), I
return to the machine... the screen is black and the only
error is that it's unable to find the operating system...

Shut off the power completely and it reboots ok, but I
don't know what could be causing it to even look for the
OS while it's suspended... ?? The device is NOT on a
network, dsl, or cable... internet via dial up only...

Any ideas or suggestions would be very helpful...

thanks... tt

Well... this hard drive is in a notebook, so it plugs directly in... it's
about a year old and hasn't been removed and the portable is not moved
around much... it just stays plugged into the ac power...

I was thinking maybe a bad battery (that won't hold a charge) that crapped
out while the system was suspended...

There doesn't seem to be anything in the knowledge base... The system is
protected with the latest Norton Anti-Virus definitions, so I don't think
that's a problem...

Any other ideas ??? Thanks... t
